Solar cells have the working principle as a diode when no light. The composition of solar cells as well as diodes, which is composed of two layers called the PN junction.
When light comes and strikes the surface of the N-Si with a thickness of 0.5 μm, the light energy is absorbed by h.v, or so-called photons. Large photon energy, can release electrons to the depletion layer region, this causes the occurrence of free electrons and holes (positive charge carriers). Therefore there is a fairly large
electric field in depletion region, the electrons move to the area N-silicon, and holes moving into the area P-silicon. The process of release of electrons and holes occurs faster than the recombination of electrons and holes.
